UC ME students win First and Third place in IEEE competition to predict failure of complex engineering system

Tianyi Wang won First place and $2,500.00 for his solution to a challenging engineering system reliability problem competition sponsored by the IEEE Reliability Society.  Joining Mr. Wang in the winner's circle was Bob Yu who took Third place honors.  The competition had 38 entrants and included many professional engineers.

The problem competition was part of on an upcoming International Conference on Prognostics and Health Management (PHM)  and is intended for researchers, R&D engineers, and managers working in the emerging interdisciplinary field of failure prediction.  The goal of the challenge problem is to estimate remaining life of an unspecified component using data-driven techniques.  For example, given a set of data on an unknown system - a fleet of ships, a group of aircraft -  the program must predict the number of remaining operational cycles before failure in the test set.

Both Tianyi and Bob study under Professor Jay Lee and work in the Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems
