Why UC?

The SAE Formula car at right was designed, fabricated, built, raced and competed in the Society of Automotive Engineers Formula Competition. It is one example of what Mechanical Engineering students at the University of Cincinnati might be involved in.sae2002-3

The mission of the Mechanical Engineering Program is to educate students in the fundamentals of engineering and help them develop their full potential as competent engineers, leaders and responsible citizens of a global society. Primary goals are enhancement of the ability of graduates to apply basic knowledge to engineering situations, to function competently in multidisciplinary situations, to communicate effectively and to understand professional and ethical responsibilities.

 

Program Objectives

 

  • Our students will be prepared for successful careers, for graduate studies and for lifelong learning.
  • Our students will have an understanding of the fundamental tools of mechanical engineering analysis, including a solid foundation in the mathematical, computational and fundamental science knowledge necessary for engineering problem solving.
  • Our students will develop the skills pertinent to the design process, including the ability to formulate problems, to analyze and synthesize information, to think creatively, to make informed decisions, to communicate effectively, and to work in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Our students will learn to use state-of-art experimental and data analysis techniques necessary for engineering applications.
  • Our students will understand the relationship of engineering and the global society and will have an understanding of their professional and ethical responsibilities.

In many ways, the Mechanical Engineering Program at UC is like other engineering programs around the country. However, there are several differences that distinguish UC from other programs.

The main difference is the co-operative education program. Students gain real world engineering experience, and get paid, while they complete their education. The Mechanical Engineering program is a 5-year program. Students go to school for 2 semesters and then begin the alternating work and study semesters. Students work for 5 semesters while completing the middle 3 years of the curriculum. The senior year is 2 semesters in school. The in school time is 8 semesters, just like any 4 year program. But the work experience is invaluable.

Because of the long history of co-op, employers have developed extensive programs. Opportunities exist at the very small companies as well as the very large. Students might work for General Electric Aircraft Engines, Cummins International, Procter and Gamble, Delphi, or Ethicon Endo-Surgery. They could also work for a 2 or 3 person consulting company.

The curriculum has been designed to first educate students in calculus and differential equations, physics and chemistry that are necessary for a strong foundation in all engineering disciplines. Students then are educated in the engineering fundamentals, Newtonian Mechanics, strength of materials, computer usage, materials, and electric circuits. The core concepts of a mechanical engineering curriculum are then taught through courses in both the energy stem and the structure/motion stem. At the same time, students take laboratory courses, computer courses and other associated courses that broaden their education. Finally, in the senior year, students take their final design experience and are permitted to take elective courses that will help them meet their individual career objectives. Throughout the five years, students take the necessary courses to fulfill the General Education requirements of the College. Student who enter the Program with significant advanced standing are encouraged to take courses which may lead to a minor in mathematics or in another academic program. Throughout the curriculum, students are exposed to modern technology and are required and encouraged to use the computer as a tool to solve problems and communicate more effectively with others.

The faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Program has spent significant time and effort to insure that students are exposed to engineering design. At the beginning of the process, projects are limited in scope. As the students progress in technical competence, design projects become more challenging.

Students are required to work on design projects in both the energy stem and the structure motion stem of the curriculum. The design experience for Mechanical Engineering students starts in the fourth semester. Both Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines and Fluid Mechanics have design as part of their requirement. In each subsequent quarter, students are challenged by design projects.

Co-op also plays an integral part in exposing students to real world design experience. As a part of most students' co-op experience, they are exposed to design projects.

The final experience for students in the Mechanical Engineering Program is the Design Clinic. This two semester sequence serves as the "capstone" experience for students. In the first semester, students are instructed in the design process, communications, ethics, originality, and other design needs. Guest speakers are used to reinforce topics. In the second semester, students work on industrial projects. They are assigned a company monitor and a faculty mentor who help them through the design process.
