Senior Year Electives

In the senior year, the Mechanical Engineering curriculum allows students to select elective courses to help them prepare for what comes next in their PROFESSIONAL career; normally work or graduate school.  These elective courses are broadly labeled Department and Guided Electives.

Department Electives (sometimes referred to as technical electives) are, as the name implies, courses that are taught by the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.  These courses will generally have a MECH or MTEN course number.  In special cases, with approval of the senior class advisor, courses from other engineering program can be approved for department elective credit.  The curriculum requires 6 semester hours of Department Electives.

The Mechanical Engineering Curriculum requires 3 semester hours of guided electives. Guided electives are courses that a student and their academic advisor agree will help the student professionally. It is strongly encouraged that each student meets with their advisor, discuss their career objectives, and select their guided electives.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A COURSE APPROVED FOR A GUIDED ELECTIVE FOR ONE STUDENT WILL NOT BE APPROVED FOR ANOTHER STUDENT.

Students may petition for courses that are not on the above list to count for Guided Elective credit.
