Dr. Rupak Banerjee and S. Manna develop novel drug delivery system

Drug delivery micro implant

 

Dr. Banerjee and his doctoral student, Soumyarwit Manna, have successfully developed a novel polymer-based biodegradable intravitreal micro-implant platform which administers therapeutic release of hydrophilic drug (MTX) over a period of 1 month.
 
The findings of the in vitro characterization study of the micro-implant are patented and published in the ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering. The micro-implant is also evaluated in a limited number of rabbit eyes where it showed therapeutic release of the drug for greater than 1 month without any evident toxicity.
 
The accelerator funding, which could be up to $40,000.00,  will facilitate Dr. Banerjee in conducting a more elaborate pre-clinical trial for improved in vivo evaluation of the micro-implant. A successful completion of this pro- ject would enable obtaining IND approval from the US-FDA to initiate Phase I clinical trials us- ing the micro-implant.
