ME Professor Dan Humpert’s research and development efforts praised in Cincinnati Enquirer for creating “smart” homes for seniors

Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Education Director for the Center for Robotics Research, Daniel Humpert, is collaborating with the UC College of Nursing and Maple Knoll Village to conduct research and development to enable seniors to have a higher quality of life.

The goal of the project is to create “aging in place” opportunities for seniors that will allow older adults to stay in their own homes, while also ensuring their safety and security.

Examples of the innovations that have been incorporated include: systems to detect when a resident falls, exoskeleton technology to assist with sitting and standing, and sensors to monitor the opening and closing of medication dispensers. According to Teik Lim, dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science, this is a “model for the future.”  Read the entire article here in the Cincinnati Enquirer.
