MINE students win 2007 ASME design competition

Four UC Mechanical Engineering students, Timothy Downing, David Siegel, Ryan Smith and Brian Stebbins have won the 2007 ASME Mechanical Engineering Design Competition.

The design objective: build a prototype of a human powered water purification device.  This device would be used in third world countries or disaster areas such as New Orleans LA after Hurricane Katrina to provide essential drinking water.  A remarkably clever design that uses a bicycle frame, permanent magnets, copper tubing and pvc pipe that is simple to make, transport and that can save lives in times of crisis.  You can read their design document here for further details.

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Nuclear Engineering we would like to extend our sincerest congratulations on a job well done.
